Number Series Involving Division

Number series is a progression or an ordered list of numbers governed by a pattern or rule. Numbers in a sequence are called terms. A sequence that continues indefinitely without terminating is referred to as infinite sequence, whereas a sequence with an end is known as finite sequence. Questions related to Number Series series questions can be solved by using Division. In this method, we will divide the term with some number to get the second term and second term with some number to get the third term and so on. On the basis of the result, we will find the next number in the series.

Some examples are:

Illustration : Find the missing term.

144, 72, 36, 18, ?

(A)12

(B) 9

(C) 6

(D) 3

Answer: (B)

Solution : 144/2 = 72,   72/2 = 36,  36/2 = 18,  18/2 = 9

Illustration :Find the missing number:

2187, 729, 243, 81, ?

(A). 27

(B). 31

(C). 33

(D). 25

Answer : (A)

Solution : Divide the first term 2187 by 3 to get second term 729. Divide 729 by 3 to get 243. Thus, dividing 81 by 3 to get 27 and that is the answer.

Illustration : Find the missing number.

30030, 15015, 5005, 1001, ?

(A) 141

(B) 143

(C) 145

(D) 147

Answer : (B)

Solution : In the given number series, every term is divided by the prime number.

30030/2 = 15015

15015/3 = 5005

5005/ 5 = 1001

1001/ 7 = 143

So, the answer is 143.
